Apple: What to expect from Apple in 2022: iPhone 14, iMac, XR headset and more
2021 has been a hot year for Apple, with all-new MacBook Pros, iPhone 13s with a smaller notch, iMacs and iPad Pros with the M1 chip, third-generation AirPods, and even a new AirTag accessory. The coming year also promises a lot of announcements: we summarize the rumors and leaks at the moment.
iPhone 14
The mini versions proved to be a sales flop, so Apple may drop them. The 2022 lineup is rumored to look like this: 6.1-inch iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
If the leaks are true, the iPhone 14 will get the biggest design update since the iPhone X. Models with the prefix Pro will lose the notch. It is not yet clear in what format: some sources say that one hole for the front camera will remain on the surface, others report a double hole. In the latter case, an oblong cutout will fit a selfie sensor and an infrared camera, a round cutout will fit a dot projector for Face ID.
There is hope that the entire series will receive ProMotion displays (dynamic refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz), but one of the sources refutes this information.
The Apple A16 Bionic chip is expected to be even more powerful and energy efficient than its predecessor. TSMC will build it on the NP4 process, the third iteration of the 5nm process improvement. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, there will be support for Wi-Fi 6E.
The 48-megapixel camera will allow iPhone to shoot video in 8K resolution – such content will be useful for demonstration in an AR / VR headset. Photos in poor light will be captured at 12 megapixels using binning technology (pixel binning). The appearance of a periscope telephoto lens is not excluded .

There are also rumors that smartphones will abandon Lightning in favor of MagSafe or even USB-C wireless charging. It is not clear if this change will happen in the iPhone 14 or in one of the next generations. Apple is also allegedly advising carriers to prepare to launch eSIM-only smartphones in 2022. But in some countries the technology does not work, so versions with the usual SIM tray will definitely remain.
Announcement, as always, in the fall.

Apple Watch Series 8
Prior to the launch of Watch Series 7, several reputable sources claimed that the watch would get flat edges, but this never happened. Perhaps a redesign will overtake the 2022 series. The display, most likely, will not change: its structure was redesigned in the last generation, it is unlikely that Apple will make changes to this aspect in a year.
Apple is working on several sensors to track physical performance. Among them are blood pressure monitoring, a thermometer, sensors for detecting sleep apnea and diabetes. It is unlikely that many features will appear in 2022, especially given the complexity of developing such a compact tonometer. Rather, it is a plan for several years.
Apple is also planning to launch a traffic detection feature for the iPhone and Apple Watch. It will use the accelerometer to track sudden changes in acceleration. In addition to the Series 8, an update to the low-cost Watch SE is expected, as well as a ruggedized model. The latter will be appreciated by people who go in for extreme sports.
AirPods Pro 2nd Generation
The second generation of AirPods Pro may lose its signature leg. The earphones will stay in the auricle due to a small earhook or body shape, like Google Pixel Buds or Samsung Galaxy Buds.
Apple is also trying to implement support for the ALAC (Apple Lossless) codec. Current AirPods (even Max) are not capable of lossless audio due to Bluetooth limitations. Of the nice additions is the search function: the headphones will make a sound if the user tries to find them through the Find My application.
Sources say that the release of the accessory can not be expected until the second half of the year. Someday AirPods will learn to track the user’s physical parameters like heart rate and even control posture .
iPhone SE 5G
It is likely that the iPhone SE (2022) will retain the design and 4.7-inch LCD display of the previous model. The main change will be the chipset – Apple A14 or A15 with 5G support. So the smartphone will become the cheapest among Apple devices with support for fifth-generation networks.
Insider Ross Young claims that the new product will be called the iPhone SE + 5G, and in 2023 the manufacturer will introduce a model with an enlarged display – by 5.7 or 6.1 inches. Another source said that the iPhone SE in the design of the iPhone XR (it has a screen of 6.1”) should not be expected until 2024.
The presentation should take place in the spring, in March or April.
MacBook Air
The laptop will be updated in a big way. It will borrow from the 24-inch iMac a variety of body colors and white bezels – perhaps not without a display cutout, like the MacBook Pro (2021).
Apple has already brought miniLED display backlighting technology to the MacBook Pro (2021), and now it may appear in the lower line. If the frames around the screen are thin enough, it will not do without a cutout for the front camera. However, on a white frame, it will stand out too much: designers may change their minds.
A MagSafe port will also move from the “professional” series, and HDMI and an SD reader are not worth the wait. An important change will be the transition to the Apple M2 chipset. This is an update to the year before last M1, that is, it will not compete with the more powerful M1 Pro and M1 Max. Up to 10 graphics cores will be added to the chip, and the CPU configuration can also be changed. MacBook Air (2022) will be presented in the second half of the year. Together with him, they can show the MacBook Pro 14 ”on the same M2 chip – it will supposedly replace the MacBook Pro 13”, which was released in 2020.

iMac or iMac Pro
Apple has already moved the 24-inch iMac to Apple Silicon rails, now it’s the turn of the 27″ iMac. The company can return the Pro console, at the same time supplying the computer with high-performance M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. The design of the iMac Pro will combine the features of the iMac 24” and Pro Display XDR. There will be several color variations, but the bezels will be black, not white, like the younger brother.
From the rest – a miniLED backlit display with ProMotion technology, a similar set of connectors to the MacBook Pro (2021) and from 16 GB of RAM. Apple allegedly tested Face ID, but it may not appear in the final edition of the device. The presentation can happen in the spring. They say that the price will start at $ 2,000.
mac mini
Apple will remove computer configurations with Intel chips from sale, releasing a new version with M1 Pro and M1 Max. Buyers will be able to choose up to 64GB of RAM and use four Thunderbolts.
Insider Jon Prosser has posted renders of the Mac mini in a new design, with a two-tone plexiglass top cover, a magnetic power port from an iMac 24”, as well as Ethernet, HDMI, and two USB-A. Mac Pro Apple is working on two versions of the
Mac Pro.
One of them is a direct successor to the modular computer of the 2019 model without any visual changes. The other will be much more compact. Bloomberg writes about the features of the Power Mac G4 Cube, a computer released in 2000. Jon Prosser thinks the model will look like three or four Mac minis stacked on top of each other.
The Mac Pro will include improved computing platforms, likely clusters of multiple M1 Max with 40 CPU cores and 128 GPU cores for top performance. The Mac Pro will be introduced in the fourth quarter of 2022, completing the transition cycle of the company’s computers to Apple Silicon solutions.
iPad Pro
The key change in the tablet will be the introduction of wireless charging. Bloomberg wrote that Apple is testing a glass back cover, but due to the vulnerability of the material, it was decided to increase the “apple” glass logo. Apple also allegedly strengthened the MagSafe magnets so that a heavy device could not “jump off” the connection when dropped.
Insider Dylandkt claims that the front camera and the Apple logo will be placed in a horizontal format. The manufacturer is promoting the iPad Pro as a complete laptop replacement, so the change makes sense. It is expected that the 11-inch model will get a miniLED backlit screen, which is already available in the 12.9-inch format. Apple is testing prototypes with larger dimensions, in a titanium case and with OLED matrices, but the features are unlikely to materialize in a real product in 2022.
iPad Air fifth generation
Rumor has it that the Apple A15 Bionic chip from the current iPhone will be inserted into the iPad Air (2022), which will bring fifth-generation network support to the tablet. The 7-megapixel front camera will become 12-megapixel, at the same time, it will receive the “Center Stage” function. It tries to keep a person (or several people) in the frame if the objects are moving relative to the tablet. Another spring announcement from Apple, the presentation should go along with the iPhone SE 5G.

Augmented/Mixed Reality Headset
If the insider information is confirmed, 2022 will be the start for a new direction for Apple – mixed reality devices. The company has had ambitions in this area before: LiDAR is not in vain in a number of top-end devices. The first physical device will be an augmented or mixed (AR + VR) reality headset. Two chips will be built into it, one of them will be responsible for processing data from sensors, the other will give performance at the level of M1 or M1 Pro .

Two or three displays are responsible for displaying content. The main ones are microLED panels manufactured by Sony with 4K resolution for each. A set of cameras – perhaps more than ten – will be responsible for biometrics, capturing the surrounding space and tracking the movement of the pupils.
The interface of the operating system, supposedly called rOS (reality OS), will be controlled by gestures. According to Bloomberg, the XR headset will perform three tasks: gaming, media consumption and communication. Apple will launch a separate app store optimized for the format. The XR-headset can be shown at WWDC in June, and released for sale at the end of the year, but it is possible that the dates will be shifted: the engineers allegedly had several problems.
In 2024 or 2025, augmented reality glasses in the spirit of Google Glass are expected to be released.
